Be Still

Be still

Stillness.

One thing I continually struggle with is being still.

I like to go, to see, to explore and discover. I am a hiker, a reader, a writer, a friend. So why would I ever need to be still?

Stillness is such a rare value in our world today. With crazy hectic schedules, and everyone working or going to school, being still just doesn’t seem to be an option.

That’s because we have chosen to fill our days to overflowing. But if we are honest with ourselves, how many of those activities do we truly enjoy, need, or do very well?

Whenever I get overwhelmed with the schedules and to-do lists, I forget to be still.

But Christians are called to be still; so that we can know God better. And when I make time in my busy day to be still before the Lord, He never fails to reveal His love and grace to me. When I truly quiet my own heart to seek His, he floods my spirit with peace. Have you felt this kind of peace? This is the kind of peace everyone wants, but few attain.

So I ask you, what would your day look like if you scheduled time to meet with God, to pray, and read His word? It will be more than worth it. The Lord will amaze you, if you give Him the chance.

Love in Christ,

Ariel

When Plans Go Awry

We plan, we muse, we decide. We think we know exactly what will happen, because we were so meticulous and disciplined in our efforts to plan the ideal day.

But at the end of the day, it’s not up to you.

It’s not up to you at the beginning of the day either.

I struggle with this, but you know what? I’ve gotten so much better.

Because when my plans go awry, I know God’s plan must be better.  He knew He had to derail my plan, so that I would follow His. It’s not that I’m always stubbornly walking in a different direction, but rather I don’t always see that my way is not compatible with His.

And then there are times when you realize the evil one has tripped you up… making it hard to find the narrow road again.

Plans change, but God does not. I want that fact to reassure you, not scare you. We can fully trust God because He is unchanging, and promises to work things together for the good of those who love Him.

Now, my daily hope is that God will guide me in the plan that He has for me. I want to be so close to His heart, that my first reaction is to be kind, loving, and understanding when things turn upside down.

Don’t fall into the pit of complaining and negativity when your plans fall apart. Once you get down there, it may be hard to dig yourself out. I’d like to challenge you to see it as an opportunity; to follow a new path, meet new people, and show God’s love to those you may not have even seen today, if it weren’t for Him taking the wheel.

Every time I surrender, and remember that God’s got this, I am filled with peace.

No matter where I am. No matter who I am with. No matter how many plans fall to the wayside. When my focus is on glorifying God with my life, He will turn my topsy turvy life right side up… and fill my heart with joy.

Praying you realize God’s plans for you are good, and that He will give you everything you need to press on.

In Christ,

Ariel

He is calling, will you answer?

“Make every effort to accept as your calling the life I have assigned to you… If I have called you to a situation, I will give you everything you need to endure it–and even to find joy in the midst of it.” Sarah Young

Life; here and now, is what He has called you too! I always thought of my “calling” as something specific that would happen in the future. But He calls us every day! To rise up, face challenges, and bring Him glory. We are called to represent the light of Christ in this dark world.

I’ll admit I get caught up in my hopes for the future… and sometimes miss out on the blessings of today! God has called us to live in today, not worry about tomorrow. There are many people you will come into contact with today. How will you show them the love of Christ?

It’s true, loving others and reaching out will take you out of your comfort zone. It’s easy to fall into a routine, day in, day out. But His calling on your life remains. When you know the love of Christ, His spirit in you should make you eager to share it. His love is so deep, there is enough to spread throughout the whole world… so how about we start with our own little corners of it?

The situations at home, work, and within ourselves may be challenging. But when we are focused on God, He gives us everything we need to endure it, and even find some joy in the midst of it!

My current situation has me in a period of waiting… which is so against my nature. I like to go places, meet people, and experience new things. God has shown me that I needed this slow time to reconnect with old friends, build new friendships, appreciate my family, and grow closer to Him. He has been, and will be, my Joy!

Inspiration for this post is from the devotional “Jesus Today” by Sarah Young. I highly recommend it!

Are You Caught in the Middle?

Season of life

Will it Never End?

When restlessness creeps in, it unnerves you. You’re sitting still, but all you want to do is move. Sometimes you are sitting somewhere, like class, a meeting, or church. You have to tap your foot just to stay awake.

Is it the monotone speaker, the lack of caffeine, or your own thoughts that cause your eyelids to grow heavy?

This is what I call the middle.

These are the times when things seems so mundane or routine that you’d rather just sleep through them. Does anyone else feel this way?

When you’re in the middle, you feel stuck. You’re left wondering if things will ever change.

If they do change, will you be ready? You may even have some changes, like a move, job change, or family situation that is on the horizon. You may never be 100% ready for what comes, but you can take this time in the middle to prepare yourself.

I’m not one to be idle. I’d rather be learning, discovering, and trying new things. So if you are a doer too, let me offer some tips.

Write lists.

What kind of traits will you need to be successful in the coming season? Have you struggled with keeping your word, no matter how small the promise is? Start making less promises and start keeping the ones you’ve already made. Are you spreading yourself too thin? Who are the people that need and deserve to be a priority in your life?

Make attainable goals.

We all have some dream deep down, that we hope happens someday. Travelling the world, achieving the career you’ve been striving for, and having a family are big dreams. But those are long term and are less measurable on a day-to-day level. How about writing a letter/email to a friend or family member this week? Or make a goal to call a friend, and take them to lunch. How about making a goal to read a book of the Bible over the next 3 weeks? We need smaller goals to achieve while we continue on the path to reaching the big ones.

Be open to opportunities.

Things won’t always go according to plan… but don’t let it ruin your day! See that long wait at the coffee shop as a chance to make the barista smile. That traffic jam can turn into a music jam session in your car! Be willing to encourage others, even when things seem pretty dismal. Whenever you share sunshine with someone else, the light shines on you also :).

Don’t get stuck in the middle, waiting, tapping your foot. Let it be your opportunity to learn, make goals, and spread some cheer.
